BAWIFM scores with Pixar, Trouble the Water events
Simone Nelson, BAWIFM board chair, flew in from the Berlin Film Festival. Brenda Chapman, Director, The Bear and The Bow (TBATB) left Reese Witherspoon and flew in from L.A. The Pixar theatre was brimming with enthusiasm as the cameras started to roll. No, it wasn’t a screening of Up, it was a BAWIFM panel of the Women of Pixar that included Katherine Sarafian, Producer, TBATB, Darka Anderson, Senior Producer, Toy Story 3, Sharon Calahan, DP, Cars 2, Tia Kratter, Art Director, TBATB, Kathy Ringgild, Academy Award Nominee, Editor, Presto, Gini Santos, Animator, Up, and Galyn Susman, Producer, DVD Promo. The panel shared their paths to Pixar, mentors, and schooling and commented that women seem to favor the production side of the business rather than areas of story, animation and direction. On the importance of deadlines, the panel quoted John Lasseter as saying, ‘the film is never done, just released’ with Brad Bird adding ‘fix it on the DVD’ …ah, words to live by. Most impressive was how Simone pulled this off days after the screening of Trouble the Water at Dolby Labs with Danny Glover and while screening her own film at Berlinale. For any SF woman involved in indie film production and distribution, BAWIFM is worth checking out. Next month, several festival directors will be discussing what it takes to become an official selection. Visit www.bawifm.com for details. Hope to see you there!
